Test Code BBLD Bacterial Culture, Blood

Ordering Guidance

It is strongly recommended that blood bottles are incubated at client location on an automated instrument until they flag positive and Gram stain confirms growth is present. The bottles can then be submitted for organism identification; order IDENT / Organism Referred for Identification, Aerobic Bacteria.

Specimen Required

This test is available by special request only-preapproval by lab is required.

Patient Preparation: Collect specimen prior to initiating antibiotic therapy

Specimen Type: Blood components or stem cell products

Container/Tube: BACTEC blood culture bottles

Specimen Volume: Set of 3 bottles

Collection Instructions: Aseptically collect blood into BACTEC blood culture bottles.
