Specimen Required
Patient Preparation: Do not use alcohol to clean arm. Use alternative such as Betadine to cleanse arm before collecting any specimen for volatile testing.
Collection Container/Tube:
Preferred: Light-green top (lithium heparin plasma gel)
Acceptable: Green top (lithium heparin)
Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial
Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Plasma gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.
2. Green-top tubes should be centrifuged, and the plasma aliquoted within 2 hours of collection.

Detection of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in plasma specimens to document prior consumption or administration of ethanol
Quantification of the concentration of ethanol in plasma specimens to correlate with degree of intoxication
